Jean-Pierre Serre, a towering figure in 20th-century mathematics, celebrates his 100th birthday in 2026. Born on September 15, 1926, in Bages, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, he quickly established himself as one of the most brilliant minds of his generation. His work, remarkable for its depth, has shaped entire fields of algebraic geometry, topology, and number theory. The distinctions he has received throughout his career testify to his lasting influence: the Fields Medal in 1954, the Balzan Prize in 1985, the CNRS Gold Medal in 1987, the Wolf Prize in 2000, and the inaugural Abel Prize in 2003. Each of these awards marks a milestone in the international recognition of a body of work that continues to shape contemporary research.
To mark his centenary, an exceptional conference will be held in Paris on September 15 and 16, 2026. It will bring together several leading figures in contemporary mathematics, including Pierre Deligne, Ramon van Handel, Peter Sarnak, Maryna Viazovska, and Don Zagier. Their presence highlights the profound influence Serre has had on several generations of researchers, as well as the vitality of an intellectual legacy that continues to evolve.
The talks will take place in the Charles Hermite Amphitheatre, the historic heart of the Institut Henri Poincaré. To accommodate the large audience, the event will also be broadcast in the Gaston Darboux, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat, and Jean Perrin Amphitheatres, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. Access will be strictly limited to registered or invited attendees, upon presentation of a badge provided at reception, in order to ensure the smooth running of the event and preserve its scientific and logistical quality.
