The Project in a Few Words

Institut Henri Poincaré is producing a documentary exploring the remarkable encounter between Man Ray and the world of mathematics. The 70-minute film retraces two types of encounters: Man Ray with mathematical models, and mathematical models with Shakespeare. Through Man Ray’s perspective, a broad audience will discover a mysterious side of mathematics. The film brings together mathematicians, photographers, and experts on Man Ray and Shakespeare.

This documentary reflects the Institut Henri Poincaré’s commitment to promoting research in mathematics and theoretical physics while strengthening the links between Art and Science. The goal is to allow the camera to reveal the most inaccessible angles of mathematical models. The power of cinema—through light, projections, and movement—makes these models familiar. In doing so, it also pays tribute to Man Ray, who paved the way by giving them color and placing them in scenes that are sometimes whimsical, sometimes eerie. He freed them from their mathematical weight and transformed them into true icons.
